Established in 1961, Malayawata Steel Berhad was the brainchild
of our beloved Bapa Kemerdekaan, the late Tunku Abdul Rahman
Putra Al-Haj. Malayawata was the first integrated steel mill in
South East Asia and a pioneer of the country’s steel industry.
Coined from the word `Malaya’ and `Yawata’, Malayawata has had
an illustrious past. The company started off as a joint venture
between the government of Malaysia and Yawata Iron and Steel Co.
Ltd of Japan (now known as Nippon Steel Corporation).
From the Malaysian-Japanese joint venture, Malayawata moved on
to a more localized administration under PERNAS, and finally,
the management takeover by main board listed Ann Joo Resources
Berhad in August 2000.
Strategically located on 277 acreage of land in the northern
industrial hub of Prai, Malayawata is involved in the
manufacture of steel billets, round bars, deformed bars and wire
rods.
Malayawata has one steel making plant with a annual planned production
output reaching 900,000 metric tones and three rolling mills with a
combined annual rolling capacity of 620,000 metric tones. The
steel making plant is equipped with a dedusting plant, one
revamping 90mt DC Furnace, one ladle furnace and one Continuous
Casting Machine, all utilizing the latest state-of-the-art
technology. Two of the rolling mills are located in Prai, Penang
while the third is in Shah Alam, Selangor. Apart from our steel
making plant and rolling mills, Malayawata also has a plant
producing oxygen and nitrogen.
For more than 40 years, Malayawata has been instrumental in
supporting Malaysia’s national and strategic pursuit to achieve
industrialized nation status.
